Controlling Your Self-Talk When You Fail

Yesterday, while my wife and kids were at a movie they had eagerly waited to see, I was having a chat with a retailer of customized furniture.

In addition to selling his own creations in a touristy beach area, he also features art and various objects fashioned by locals that he sells on consignment.

Happily, he had decided to display about 12 of my wife’s original oil paintings. I have to say, upon bringing them into his store, I could appreciate them all the more. They’re colorful, ranging from abstract-modern to impressionistic.

Some feature sailboats, one of her favorite images. Others are non-representational, and all of them looked great in that environment.

This had all come together quite by accident. I stopped by his store when I was returning books to the nearby library. His space had been empty for a few months, and suddenly it was occupied so I peeked in.

We talked furnishings and other things and it really didn’t occur to me that her paintings would be a good fit, until I had left. I popped in the next day and mentioned her art, gave him her web site, and by the following day, the paintings were ready to install.

I wasn’t selling him as much as partnering with him to display her art. Really, I’m just a go-between, a contact for him and a deliveryman for her.

Yet I left feeling on top of the world because in its way this alliance is a genuine breakthrough. She has had showings in various places, but having a retail platform that could lead to cultivating an art clientele hasn’t happened, until now.

I love selling and I’ve closed some very large deals resulting in significant income to me. Yet this is just as exciting in its way.

Naturally, my first thought after being elated was that I should multiply this success.

I can find other spots for her to show her work. This happy self-talk and the vision of having many alliances of this sort was making me euphoric.

And this is one of the joys of selling. It’s great fun when we succeed, and success builds on itself. We’re eager to do again that which just electrified us and delivered value to others.

Unfortunately, when we fail we’re likely to start a downward spiral of defeat that can sap our souls and make trying to succeed seem fruitless and punishing. In this regard, selling is truly a manic-depressive occupation.

“The best of times and the worst of times” happen as a cycle, repeatedly.

We need to become aware of our self-talk, especially when we’re not getting the results we want. And crucially, we have to stop that inner dialogue when it feeds on itself.

The good news is we can do it.

I live on a boat channel. You might envision it as an extended back yard. We use it as a gigantic saltwater swimming pool.

We distend a ladder from our dock and enter a wild natural environment. It’s unpredictable. An octopus lives on the quiet side of the dock, and I’ve seen videos of the creatures that swim around the channel, itself.
